In March last year Crystal Dynamics gave Tomb Raider fans a treat with a reboot of the series and a new title for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. It got generally very good reviews and has sold over 4 million copies worldwide. That’s not the end of the story for this game, though. On January 28 Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will be released for the PS4 and Xbox One.
TR:DE is an opportunity for Crystal Dynamics to produce the game they wanted to on the PS3 and Xbox 360, but without the limitations imposed by the hardware. It’s also an opportunity for gamers to see the difference a console generation can make to how games look and better immerse us in the action.
IGN has put together a graphical comparison and analysis of the PS3 and PS4 versions of the game, which you can watch below.
As you can see, the extra performance and features on offer makes a big difference to the overall look of the game. Crystal Dynamics explains that the next-gen consoles have allowed them to do more with environmental effects, particle systems, and overall immersion within the game. The whole game just looks richer graphically, the contrasting lighting works better, and characters look much more realistic/natural.
Fans of last year’s Tomb Raider release will certainly be tempted to re-purchase to enjoy the game with much improved graphics. But if you haven’t picked up the game yet, it looks like this next-gen version is certainly worth waiting for. If Crystal Dynamics opt to give it a more budget-friendly price point, too, it may even help shift a few more consoles.
