Typically the price you pay for a games console on launch day is the highest price it will ever retail for. But that’s not the case with the PS4 if you happen to live in Canada.
Over the weekend the price of Sony’s latest console was increased from the launch price of $399, to a new $449 price point. It gets worse for Canadian gamers because Sony also increased the price of the DualShock 4 and the PlayStation Camera, which are now $64.99 (was $59.99), and games have increased $10 to $69.99.
For now the game pricing has only been confirmed for MLB The Show ’14 and inFamous: Second Son, but it seems likely other high-profile releases will copy that new pricing.
The increase in prices may not come as too much of a shock for Canadians. Sony said it was due to a “change in the market environment,” which translates to a weak Canadian dollar forcing them to up the price to keep the return on par with other territories.
Sony isn’t the only company reacting to the Canadian dollar in the gaming sector. Microsoft increased the price of Xbox One games in February to $64.99, up from $59.99. But it did not increase the price of the Xbox One, and has stated there’s no plans to do so. However, the Xbox One remains more expensive than the PS4 at $499.99.
While frustrating for Canadian gamers, it’s another reason to consider holding off purchasing a next-gen machine. The PS3 and Xbox 360 have much healthier libraries of games right now, and that isn’t going to change for quite a while. Stick with last-gen, catch up on all the great games you undoubtedly missed at their launch, and consider the new machines nearer Christmas or even next year instead.
