The Oculus Rift head-mounted display is a piece of technology that gets people excited about the future, but it’s still in the prototype phase. Sony has been making its own line of head-mounted 3D displays in recent years, and it has just announced a new model at CES that could give the Oculus a run for its money when it’s released.
Sony’s HMZ-T3Q display can produce a virtual 750-inch video screen in the wearer’s vision.
Being a head-mounted display, the measurement of the screen is a loose estimation of how large the screen would be from a distance of 65 feet. The important thing is that the HMZ-T3Q covers almost the entire field of vision with a 3D display. The HMZ-T3Q tracks your head movements and can pan the visual field, which make gaming more immersive. It is also capable of 7.1 virtual surround sound.
The design of the HMZ-T3Q is almost identical to its last generation headset with a smooth chrome finish and minimalist vibe. Sony stressed the portability of its new head-mounted display, saying it is a good alternative to a large TV where such a device isn’t practical. The Oculus Rift, by comparison, is still a bulky developer kit.
Sony didn’t announce a price for the HMZ-T3Q, which is perhaps a little troubling. The company’s past head-mounted displays have been in the neighborhood of $1000. The Oculus Rift dev kit is only $300, but we don’t know how much the final version of that will be, either.
