This year things have gotten downright silly when it comes to exclusively promoting games for next generation consoles. First Microsoft’s not-so-exclusive announcement for the new Tomb Raider rattled gamers around the world, and now it looks like Sony has the exclusive rights to promote Bungie’s latest epic game Destiny. Fortunately for Microsoft, someone has turned this situation around and given us all something to laugh at.
Even though Sony has a considerable sales lead on Microsoft right now, internally these two companies will be struggling against one another for the entire life span of their consoles. However, Microsoft has the potential to catch up to Sony in a big way this holiday season, thanks to finally getting the platform where it needs to be and addressing their ID @ Xbox program.
The biggest thing that will separate the Xbox One and PS4 in 2015 is games, and Sony has made a deal with Activision that ensures you don’t see a Destiny on Xbox One ad in some regions of the world. Both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 are part of the Destiny launch, though, so Microsoft decided to skirt the rules a bit and get clever. Instead of advertising the game, we get an advert for Destiny Fragrance.
This seems like the kind of thing that is going to get worse before it gets better, because as long as Microsoft and Sony are willing to throw money at game publishers we’ll keep playing this game. If the side effect of that is clever and memorable marketing, let the rivalry and deals continue!
