The cardboard box found in Metal Gear Solid games has always been an amusing feature. It’s there to let Snake hide from the enemy, nothing more. But for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Hideo Kojima has decided to give it a major upgrade in terms of functionality. The cardboard box is no longer just for hiding in.
As the video below shows, the box in The Phantom Pain will be really useful. Sure, you can still use it to hide, but that’s just the beginning. Venom Snake can pop out the top to shoot someone, you can use the Fulton without exiting the box, it can be used as a decoy to put the enemy off your scent, and most amusingly of all, a picture of a saluting enemy soldier printed on the box can trick an enemy from distance into thinking you are an ally.
The image on the box feature extends way beyond a saluting soldier, though, and some would say it gets a bit silly. Swimsuit models? Yep, that will work as a distraction for the enemy. The fact it will distract an enemy long enough for your character to vacate the box and run away suggests the enemy soldiers are more than a little stupid.
Long time fans of the Metal Gear Solid games won’t be surprised swimsuit models are making an appearance. Previous games used magazines for the same purpose, only that makes more sense as a real distraction than a picture of a girl on a box.
Apparently the upgrades preview video doesn’t include all the new features being introduced to the cardboard box, and it ends with Venom Snake wearing a PS4 box on his head. What other gems does Kojima have in store for us?
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is set to launch in the first quarter of 2015.
