Apple By James Plafke Jun. 2, 2014 9:56 am
Later today at 1pm ET, Apple will commence with WWDC 2014. While we don’t exactly expect a new iPhone announcement (considering the phones are announced every year around the same time — fall), we do expect some big OS X and iOS news. A handful of images leaked before the show, and if accurate, they reveal that OS X is about to look more like iOS than ever before.
According to the images (and banners seen around WWDC), OS X 10.10 will be called Yosemite — not taking advantage of the triple 10 in the name and version number to make puns — and keeping in line with naming the OS after famous places instead of big cats.
Obviously, the images should be taken with caution, we’ve known for some time that Apple has been looking to merge its two operating systems into one. Launchpad — that thing you never use because it’s less convenient than opening software through the Dock, desktop, or Spotlight — was an attempt to bring Apple’s desktop OS closer to its mobile OS. Also, once upon a time, the scrollbars in OS X adopted the thin, grey bars of iOS, losing their*glowing blue color and bubbly appearance.
In the top*image, you’ll notice the Dock removes the 3D shelf-like aesthetic, and the icons adopt the flat, square iOS style. Another image, seen above and to the right, shows the desktop with the translucent Control Center overlay introduced in iOS 7.
The images were posted on Reddit, so take them with a grain of salt, but Apple has indeed been making the desktop and mobile operating systems more similar over the years. Considering WWDC 2014 begins in just a handful of hours, we won’t have to wait very long to see what’s in store for OS X.
