Next month the totally redesigned Mac Pro goes on sale with prices starting at a rather steep $2,999, but can easily go north of $3,999 with the right configuration. However, such pricing seems cheap compared to the one-of-a-kind Mac Pro Sotheby’s auctioned off over the weekend in New York for charity.
This Mac Pro is rather special because it has been designed by Apple’s Jony Ive in collaboration with industrial designer Marc Newson, and the casing is in red instead of the black version consumers will be offered. The estimate for the Mac Pro put it at anywhere between $40,000 and $60,000, but it went for a lot more than that.
The final price paid was a staggering $977,000. The proceeds will go to The Global Fund, which fights AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria in developing countries. The sale of the Mac Pro was part of a larger (RED) auction consisting of 43 lots, which managed to raise $26.2 million on the night and will be matched by a contribution from The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
It is still unknown what configuration the Mac Pro is, but I’d hope it is the top-of-the-line model so whoever paid $977K can at least enjoy owning one of the fastest consumer PCs available on the market. We also don’t know when the buyer will take delivery. Will it be before the official release of the new Mac Pro? For the price paid, I doubt they’ll keep the buyer waiting long to pick it up.
