A 28-year-old man has died from another gadget-related electrocution in Thailand. He was found the next morning by his father, clutching an iPhone 4S in his hand.
You can make our three burn marks left by the victim’s fingers on the edge of the iPhone in the image above. Another was found on his chest, leading investigators to believe that he had fallen asleep on top of the phone while it was charging.
The charger likely played a part in his death. Judging from its royal blue color, this isn’t a genuine Apple charger we’re looking at. Third-party chargers have been implicated in accidents like this before, and they’re usually the first thing Apple looks at when trying to ascertain what went wrong.
It’s also possible that the 30-pin cable was faulty or damaged. If the cable was included with the charger, its quality and reliability could certainly be questioned. Household wiring may also be looked at. Improper grounding has been blamed in deaths like this one. If any part of the wiring involved was grounded improperly, the iPhone would have provided the grounding path — and left the unfortunate victim to bear the brunt of the flowing electrical current.
Normally, a person’s hand will unclench when it’s holding something that delivers a shock. It’s the natural reaction, but there are cases where the grip fails to relax. In this particular case, it’s possible that the sleeping man’s own weight wouldn’t allow him to break his grip.
In a similar case four months ago, a Chinese woman was electrocuted and died while answering a call. Apple pledged to investigate that incident as well. Their findings aren’t readily available online, however, but it’s hard to imagine the iPhone itself being found guilty in a highly-publicized tragedy like that and no recall being issued.
It’s likely that — as in this latest case in Thailand — something other than the phone was to blame.
