As is often the case with exploits, the Evasi0n method for jailbreaking iOS versions 7.0 to 7.6 was patched by Apple in iOS 7.1. This means that iOS exploit experts are back to the drawing board, and everyone who updated to the latest version of iOS is back to waiting for the next exploit to be discovered. That is, of course, unless you have an iPhone 4.
The Jailbreak community and Apple have a difficult relationship. While the community is busy discovering exploits to Jailbreak their devices so they can become more useful, Apple is busy making sure those exploits aren’t used by the wrong people for nefarious purposes. Older hardware versions have the benefit of being around long enough for permanent exploits to be discovered, exploits that are too expensive for Apple to fix because there are fewer and fewer people using that hardware every day. As a result no matter what software version is running on something with an A4 processor, there’s an already existing exploit available to jailbreak that device. In effect, if you have an iPhone 4 you are currently immune to the software patches Apple deployed to fix iOS 7.1.
The video here is a proof of concept, there’s currently no shiny one-click jailbreak tool for your iPhone 4 that will leave you with Cydia and all of your jailbroken apps just yet. It also doesn’t mean that there’s a Jailbreak for A5, A6, or A7 devices anytime soon either. Apple has done their best to make sure iOS is as secure as possible, and unfortunately that means keeping some of their fans from doing whatever they want with the platform as well. The last jailbreak was considered nearly impossible until it happened, so reset your Jailbreak clock and hope something else gets discovered.
