Anyone with an iPhone 5S who enjoys using TouchID should quickly head in a single file line to the software update section of the settings menu, because there’s a new update to iOS 7.1 made almost entirely for you.
Apple is no stranger to releasing updates to the most recent version of iOS in order to address bugs that have been discovered since the company decided to completely overhaul the UI for one of the most popular mobile operating systems in the world, and today’s update looks to be more of the same. The iOS 7.1.1 update is geared towards improving TouchID as well as resolving a few bugs with the on-screen keyboard and any physical keyboard that would be attached through Bluetooth.

The big TouchID update is designed to help with fingerprint recognition, but Apple doesn’t go particularly in depth to describe what exactly is being improved. This could have been some adjustment with accuracy, some tweaks to help defend against artificial fingers, or maybe just instructions to clean the sensor every once in a while so it continues to work as expected. Either way this should be a fairly minor update to iOS in general, but if you use TouchID you should go ahead and grab it now.
As always, the first thing you should do is grab a backup of your existing device, just to be on the safe side. To do this you simply need to head to Settings > iCloud > Storage and Backup > Back Up Now. You’ll get an iSave an image of your iDevices to iCloud. After that you can just go back to Settings then to General > Software Update. Using this screen you can download and then install the upgrade.
