The rise of the internet has triggered the inexorable rise of pornography. As we’re all aware, the internet is adept at many tasks, but its most skilled trade is serving porn. This year has taught us not that we watch porn, but what everyone is into when doing so. What statistic might blow your mind, though, is exactly*where*everyone watches their favorite fetishes. In the United States, the majority of porn is being viewed on a smartphone.
According to Pornhub — the very same outlet that taught us what everyone is up to when in the anonymity of their own computer room — this is the first year that a country has watched the majority of its porn on a mobile device. It’s a small majority — just 52% of smartphones and 10% of tablets — but a majority nonetheless. The US is proudly leading the mobile revolution, with the United Kingdom and Mexico lagging behind at just 58% and 52%, respectively.
Last year, the US watched 47% of its porn on smartphones and 7% on tablets, so 8% of god-fearing, porn-watching, red-white-and-blue-blooded Americans hopped on that mobile gratification bandwagon. We here at Geek are a little confused about the logistics of the platform, though. As anyone who regularly plays smartphone games knows, your mom’s superpower is sending the entirety of her daily texts during your play session. If there’s anything more jarring while watching porn than the video pausing to display a big alert that says “Mom,” it should be included in a haunted house. Furthermore, it’s difficult enough lying in bed and playing a game or catching up on the internet on your phone or tablet when both hands are available. We assume that phones or cases with kickstands are on the rise.
