HTC took to the stage today to unveil a device that felt like it had been leaked so much that we knew all there was to know about it, but they showed us all that the phone has more than a few mysteries in need of solving. One potentially exciting detail was the Dot View Case, a folio cover that offered up a Lite-Brite style look into the time and weather without ever opening the cover.
The Dot View Case is little more than plastic and magnets. The front of the case covers the whole front of the phone, with special slots to allow the BoomSound speakers to do their thing. The rest of the front of the case is a grid of holes, and when you double-tap on the case while it is connected to your phone, you see a fun pixelated display that offers you the time and a quick glimpse at the weather. The weather rotates between a generic image and the actual temperature, flipping back and forth every two seconds until the display fades back to black.
As you can see in the above video, this case works with a pair of magnets on the HTC One M8. If you open the display quickly, the pixelated format can be seen just before the display recognizes that it’s time to use the phone like a phone. It’s an otherwise plain, perfectly functional plastic folio case that snaps onto the phone, but this neat little bonus features takes the tap-to-wake function on the HTC One M8 and turns it into something fun.
