Existing headsets, including Sony's own Pulse and Astro's A-series, will not be usable with PlayStation 4 when it launches this November. Sony told Game Informer a system update would enable bluetooth and USB headset functionality in the future. However, you'll be able to take advantage of headphones using digital optical audio for games, but chat will be disabled until an unspecified patch date.
This mildly contradicts Sony's earlier, generous statement that wireless PlayStation headsets would function with PS4 -- or was at least left a little open-ended so as to avoid using the phrase "at launch." Each PlayStation 4 comes packed with a wired, mono earbud.
