Maybe you’re not a fan of parting with $1,500 for an unproven piece of wearable tech, or you’d rather just build something yourself and play with it until the device suits your needs. Google Glass is not for everyone, but the idea of wearable technology is certainly on the rise. It turns out that if you’ve got access to a 3D printer and a Raspberry Pi you can just make your own face mounted computer.
The core concepts behind Google Glass are not that hard to wrap your head around. It’s essentially a Samsung Galaxy Nexus that has been shrunk down so it fits on the side of your head, complete with an OS that works well in that environment. If you loosen that a bit, you could effectively make a thin head mounted display for any computer. All you’d really need is a wireless keyboard and mouse, and a way to make the computer in question comfortably portable.
The cool thing about the Raspberry Pi is that it’s already highly pocketable and can run off batteries for quite a while. All you’d really need is to build a display that worked with the Pi and be done with it, right?
If you’ve got what it takes to dismantle a $100 pair of video glasses and the know how required to set up a RaspBerry Pi, you’ll find that most of the hard stuff is already done. The Adafruit tutorial on this setup is incredibly simple, making for a fun weekend project as long as you have access to a decent 3D printer.
This tutorial is also a huge win for Glass, believe it or not. By the time you’re done assembling this you can’t help but appreciate how Google managed to stuff so much into such a small case for their hardware, making this whole project incredibly cool to see unfold.
