The world of cryptocurrencies is a strange place. Not long after announcing a new, easier to use Bitcoin clone, the people behind Coinye West started hearing from Kanye West’s lawyers. It seems the singer was not okay with his name and image being tweaked for use by the digital currency.
In response, the currency is now just called Coinye and its mascot is a half-man-half-fish hybrid wearing glasses — totally different from Kanye West the singer.
In its written response to the cease and desist letter issued by West’s people, the anonymous developers say they have removed all references to West. Since there is no possible way (wink wink) anyone could confuse the “Meme Crypto Currency Coinye Coins (The Gay Fish)” with Kanye West, everything should be cool. They also demand an end to “harassment and scare tactics” being employed by West’s lawyers.
This new fish hybrid angle is obviously referencing the South Park episode several years back titled Fishsticks*that mocked West for taking himself too seriously. This is where the “gay fish” and man-fish-hybrid notion comes from. Sometimes life imitates art.
The renamed cryptocurrency has moved from the original domain, which now redirects to a new page that makes no direct mention of Kanye West — there’s just that fish with glasses. In the wake of the legal pressures, Coinye launched a little early on January 7th.
Yes, people are mining digital money backed by a half-man-half-fish hybrid now. It is unclear if West gets the joke.
