Samsung has announced the Galaxy S5 in 16GB and 32GB versions, but neither of those numbers are what you’ll actually have access to when you turn the phone on.
Like all smartphones, the amount of storage seen on the side of the box is not what is available for you to use. That storage is partially consumed by the operating system and apps that are pre-loaded on the device, so you usually have a bit less than advertised once you start using the phone.
Samsung has a history of consuming more storage than anyone else on their phones and tablets, but the Galaxy S5 is a whole new world of bloat. If you purchase a 16GB Galaxy S5, you’ll start off with just 7.86GB of free space.

Before you panic and throw shoes at your local Samsung rep, the Galaxy S5 is one of the few remaining Android devices that allows for removable storage. Unlike previous versions of the Galaxy line, Samsung’s S5 is following the rules of Android 4.4.2 so there’s a great chance that your removable storage will be fast and seamless, instead of a clumsy extra block of storage that can only sort of get used the way you want it to. You could also just pick up a 32GB version of the phone, but if history is any indicator that won’t be an option that is available in every carrier store.
It’s too soon to know just how big a deal this will be, but it’s something to keep in mind when you’re looking at Samsung for your next phone.
