New benchmarks show Mantle adds a solid 10% improvement in FPS in multiplayer at 1080p.
A few weeks ago, when DICE released the Battlefield 4 Mantle update, the first benchmarks, done with AMD’s beta drivers, showed some 5-10% improvement in singleplayer, which was okay, considering it’s just a software update. What most were wondering about was whether those results would translate into multiplayer performance, and now we know.
According to preliminary benchmarks, the Battlefield 4 Mantle update can add up to a solid 10% increase in frame rates, depending on the screen resolution. As the benchmarks below show, the higher the resolution, the less impact Mantle has. This is due to the fact that at higher resolutions, the game is more dependent on the GPU, while Mantle is mainly designed to improve performance for those running a weaker CPU.
At 1920 x 1080, Mantle gives about a 10% improvement over DirectX using the same hardware. As resolution goes up, the improvement levels out, to about 5% on a 2560 x 1600 display, and down to about 3% on a 4K display. However, note that these improvements are best with a powerful GPU where the CPU is the bottleneck. When the GPU was switched to a weaker R9 280X, the improvements were just a few percent.
The benchmarks below were done on an AMD Radeon R9 290X / 280X, Intel Core i7-3960X 3.3 GHz, 8 GB of or RAM, and Windows 8 64-bit.
