It's been a design mainstay for some EA games since Bad Company 2, the "orange glow behind a soldier dude" effect about as iconic as modern game art gets. If you want someone to blame/thank for this trend, then Robert Sammelin is a good place to start.
You could also, more practically, blame the fact dark blue/black and orange look so damn hot together.
Sammelin has done work in graphic design and comics, on book covers and magazines, but since 2007 he's been a senior concept artist at DICE, where he's done not only concept art for the Battlefield series, but design work like promo art as well (hence, the iconic cover imagery).
He's getting help these days from colleague Eric Persson, who I'm going to have to feature here very soon.
You can see more of Robert's work at his personal site.

Fine Art is a celebration of the work of video game artists, showcasing the best of both their professional and personal portfolios. If you're in the business and have some concept, environment, promotional or character art you'd like to share, drop us a line!
