In a Reddit AMA Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag lead writer Darby McDevitt has answered several questions pertaining to Assassin Creed III’s Connor and the future of the Assassin’s Creed series.
On whether players would receive closure on Connor’s story (along the lines of Ezio’s final chapter in the short film Assassin’s Creed Embers) McDevitt confirmed nothing was presently on the agenda.
“Not at this time,” he wrote. “Embers took [six] months to make. t was a big project, and beloved by all, but those teams are busy with other things right now. But we loved the project, so maybe we'll go that route again one day.”
McDevitt also confirmed it was “not very” likely that Connor’s story will be continued in another game in the future.
As for whether there would ever be a game that focused on a modern day assassin, McDevitt explained that was also unlikely.
“I doubt we would do a modern day AC,” wrote McDevitt. “There are just too many mechanics we would have to develop to make it [believable] ... vehicles, plausible modern cities, a huge array of ranged weapons, etc.”
“The modern day will most likely remain as a ‘context’ for all future games, something to tie them all together.”
McDevitt added he felt, “Watchdogs will scratch the itch for a modern day AC. Just wait!”
McDevitt also doesn’t see any final resolution to the Assassins vs. Templars present-day storyline.
“As for the Assassin Templar storyline resolving,” wrote McDevitt. “I don't think so. [It’s] been going for 80,000 years already. Why stop it now?”
“There will certainly be a resolution to the most recent plot developments, but the overall conflict will probably rage forever, just like most deeply divided philosophical conflicts."
Provided each new Assassin’s Creed game brings with it some kind of “unique gameplay innovation to accompany its setting” and the present day setting is honed “to be more of a ‘context’ and less ‘plot driven’ so that people aren’t constantly frustrated by a lack of resolution” McDevitt thinks the series could last “quite a long time.”
Game director of*Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag*Ashraf Ismail recently mentioned that there was, in fact, an overall arc to Assassin's Creed and there is a conclusion planned, if and when it was required.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is available now; you can read the review here.
