One of the incentives for subscribing to EA’s new Access service is the ability to play new or pre-release games early for a limited time. Now it looks as though Microsoft is going to introduce a similar feature for gamers who sign up for Xbox Live Gold on the Xbox One.
Those signed up to the Xbox One console beta in the US have been presented with a new screen listing several games along with the text “Free Play Day with Gold.” It suggests that any game in that list will be free to download to the Xbox One hard drive and play for 24 hours. At the end of the time you’ll no doubt be urged to purchase the title if you enjoyed it and want to continue playing.

As you can see, the games offered include Max The Curse of Brotherhood, Strike Suit Zero, and Crimson Dragon with at least one more on the right of the shot. Xbox Support didn’t know about this feature, but after a bit of checking they confirmed it is something in the pipeline, but they can’t confirm details just yet.
The feature has already started being compared to Steam’s free-play weekends, and it could prove popular depending on what titles are selected. Microsoft and developers do need to be careful as some games can be blasted through in less than a day making a purchase unnecessary. Free Play Day makes a lot of sense for multiplayer-focused games, or even MMOs if Microsoft is willing to extend this to a weekend of play time.
