If you planned on or unfortunately ended up having a lonely New Year’s Eve keeping warm by the exhaust vent of your Xbox One, you might have had a night even worse than that already sounds. According to user reports, the Xbox One is experiencing streaming issues with its popular media services.
Reports suggests that the quality of Netflix and Amazon Instant Video have been subpar — far below HD, and even below standard definition. The services are apparently not to blame, as the same reports suggest that streaming on other devices — including the Xbox One’s rival, the PS4 — have been working as intended. Rather than just random dudes from the internet, though, game industry veterans also claimed to be experiencing the quality dip.
Former Infinity Ward developer Robert Bowling*tweeted that he was also experiencing the streaming issue, noting that streaming on the PS4 was running at a stable 1080p.*Other reports claimed that movies on Netflix would get stuck during the loading process.
Microsoft has not responded to the reports just yet, but while the issues are just claims from the internet at the moment, industry vets like Bowling likely wouldn’t make erroneous claims just to stir the pot. Isolated streaming issues also aren’t out of the ordinary; in the past, some of us have experienced the PS3 version of Netflix having noticeable quality and loading issues, while every other iteration of Netflix ran fine.
For now, if you are indeed experiencing quality issues streaming media on your Xbox One, be patient, and watch your videos on one of the other millions of devices you own that runs the very same service.
