By now, it’s practically a law of causality that, should some kind of software be released, it will be cracked or jailbroken soon thereafter. A few weeks ago, we wrote about why this law might face a tough challenge when iOS 8 hits the street, but for now, software wizards have released an untethered jailbreak for iOS 7.1.1.
The nefarious (or helpful, depending on what you dabble in) jailbreak, known as PanGu, has released for Windows, but should work on any iOS device despite the conflict-of-interest operating systems. As for the installation process, it’s roughly as easy as every other modern jailbreak (though slightly more tedious), but if you want to be absolutely sure you’re not going to brick your phone, you can check this Reddit thread*for installation instructions.
PanGu is from a relatively new team, but other scene stalwarts have checked out the hack and claim that it checks out. However, the safe move would be to wait a little bit and see how it all shakes out before installing it onto your phone — you never know what’s lurking beneath a hack from a team that hasn’t been around the block much. One other hang-up that might prevent you from giving the jailbreak a go: it installs a piracy app store onto the device. You can remove*it easily enough, but something intentionally installing a piracy store that you can only remove after it’s installed is a little disconcerting.
If you’re a bold prison escapist, then you can grab the hack from here.
