At the end of Sony’s 2014 E3 press conference that likely sent Microsoft home with its*Halo 5 pre-rendered trailer between its*legs, the company capped off the show with the unveiling of Naughty Dog’s next game,*Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Considering Naughty Dog’s most beloved franchise just got given to the*designers of its best game –*The Last of Us — fans already had much to look forward to. Now, with the quick teaser shown at E3, fans have even more to anticipate: everything shown was captured on a PS4, and Nathan Drake has literally never looked better.
We don’t yet know much about the game, but from the short teaser and the subtitle “A Thief’s End,” we do know that the game will take a darker tone than is customary for the series. Considering*The Last of Us leads are now running the Nathan Drake show, and*TLOU is anything but happy, this potential turn wouldn’t be unexpected. What would be a little unexpected, though, is if the actual gameplay graphics looked like the teaser below.
The very proud message at the beginning of the teaser — that all footage was captured on a PS4 — doesn’t state that it is, in fact, in-game, gameplay footage. The*Uncharted*series does employ a hefty dose of pre-rendered scenes, but even if the above teaser is just that, it’s still far beyond previous pre-rendered scenes in the series.
As for story tidbits, the short narration seems to be a flashback of Nathan trying to talk his pal Sully into one last job, which would certainly coincide with that potentially ominous subtitle. Perhaps it’s just the lighting in the scene, but Nathan looks older, and the teaser stated that he’s been out of the game for a while. An older character was used — to great effect — in*The Last of Us, so perhaps the team is trying that once again. We all love Nathan Drake, and seeing him old and less able-bodied would almost immediately bring a new level of emotion to the narrative.
That’s all that was divulged so far, stay tuned for more info when it arrives.
