When the PS4 released, one of the many advantages it had over the Xbox One — a focus on games, cheaper but more powerful hardware, good press from E3, embracing indie developers — was that it released with the ability to stream games via Twitch straight from the console. If comparing non-gaming features, it’s fair to say that while the Xbox One was focused on TV integration, the PS4 was focused more on a social media experience. Microsoft always said the Xbox One was getting Twitch, though, but for whatever reason, it was continually delayed since launch. Now, with the release of*Titanfall — the first flagship game of this generation — Xbox One games will finally get to stream their play sessions over Twitch on March 11.
Whether or not it’s used for good or evil, the internet is nothing if not a hotbed for creativity. Soon after the PS4 released, intrepid gamers figured out a way to use the PlayStation Camera to stream a live feed from their living rooms. The most notable instance of this was a live call-in talk show hosted through the app, which received a call from Sony PR man Adam Boyes. For better or worse, the Xbox One is saddled with a Kinect, so these live shows could pop up on Microsoft’s box as well. However, if that’s the case, then other types of live shows will likely pop up as well.
The Xbox One Twitch app will also sport some features that the PS4 app does not, such as the implementation of voice controls thanks to the Kinect, and the ability to archive streams.
With the recent release and subsequent sell-out of the PS4 in Japan, Sony likely isn’t too worried about*Titanfall or the Xbox One finally catching up to the Twitchosphere. However, with the soon-to-be released $500 Xbox One*Titanfall*bundle (where, basically,*Titanfall is free) and Xbox One streams popping up on the internet soon enough, Microsoft should at least make up some ground.
