There’s no doubt now that the Xbox One currently has an issue achieving 1080p resolution. But that’s not to say 1080p isn’t achievable in the future, and should become commonplace once a new SDK is released to developers.
However, Titanfall isn’t going to benefit from such an update. It is out in March and the beta of the game kicks off tomorrow. Posting on the Titanfall Blog, Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that the game will not run at 1080p natively on the Xbox One.
Respawn began by targeting builds running at 720p during the early stages of development. Then for the beta they have managed to increase that to 792p. Although an unusual resolution, it can be upscaled to 1080p, so the higher the game achieves natively the better the upscaled version should end up looking.
As for the resolution of the final build that will ship to gamers, Respawn is targeting 900p native, which will then be upscaled to 1080p by Microsoft’s console. It’s not true 1080p, but it’s close, and as the gameplay videos have shown already, the game does look really good even at 720p.
What’s (much) more important is that this is a fluid playing experience. Precision is everything in a multiplayer game, so Titanfall can’t ship with any kind of slowdown or stuttering during heavy action scenes as that’s going to ruin the game for a lot of people. If the resolution suffers in order to ensure that doesn’t happen, so be it. That’s the right thing to do on Respawn’s part.
