We’re only a week away from Samsung officially announcing the new Galaxy K, but it turns out this camera hybrid stopped for a photoshoot on the way.
Samsung is one of several companies servicing an ever growing niche of users that would rather have a really good camera on their smartphone then carry a DSLR or something equivalent. While smartphone camera tech has been increasing exponentially over the last couple of years, at some point you really need a good old fashioned optical zoom. The Galaxy Camera and Galaxy Zoom lines serve those purposes, and not that the Galaxy Zoom is being re-branded as the Galaxy K it’s likely Samsung is going to start taking this new offshoot a lot more seriously.

The Galaxy K that we see here looks a lot like its predecessor. The optical zoom and flash placement look nearly identical, and it’s certainly a little slimmer than it’s predecessor, but the notch to remove the back plate seems to be missing. If the rear isn’t removable, that would certainly be a surprise coming from Samsung. Other than the back there’s not a lot else to see. This device is expected to be a six-core Samsung Exynos 5 Hecta SoC with 2GB of RAM powers an Android 4.4.2 phone with a 4.8-inch 720p display. The 16mp sensor has been replaced with a 20mp sensor, which offers a 10x optical zoom and a Xenon flash.
Especially given what we’ve seen with the new camera software in the Samsung Galaxy S5, this could be an incredible experience for photography enthusiasts who care more about optics than the operating system on their smartphone.
We’ve only got a week to go for Samsung to make this whole thing official, so stay tuned.
