Sony offered gamers a cheaper way to purchase a PS3 last year by offering a 12GB version of the console for $199. Just like all PS3s, you can upgrade to a larger hard drive yourself, but it is possible to function within the 12GB limit if you manage saves and installs regularly. However, if you play GTA Online that won’t be the case for much longer.
Rockstar has updated its support forum to inform GTA Online players who use a 12GB PS3 that the game is going to stop working when the next update is released. We’re currently on version 1.16, so with 1.17 you won’t be able to play anymore. Don’t worry, though, you can solve the issue relatively easily and cheaply.
The problem is one of storage space. GTA Online requires all the content and all the updates be installed for the game to function. With the next update the game will be larger than the 12GB system can handle, and therefore you’ll get an error. The solution? Simply buy a hard drive for your PS3.
If you’re not willing to or can’t afford to do that then Rockstar says GTA V Story Mode will still be accessible, you just need to play while not being connected to the PlayStation Network.
This probably won’t come as too much of a surprise to 12GB PS3 owners. GTA Online/V isn’t a small game and it was only going to get bigger with content updates. I imagine many gamers have already hit the limits of the 12GB PS3 many times over if they play multiple games. Upgrading is a simple task, and cheap to do. Alternatively, some may see this as a reason to break the habit and stop playing GTA Online.
