Like many Dragon’s Lair fans, co-creator Don Bluth wants to return to the sword and sorcery franchise. The legendary animator and partner Gary Goldman even have a plan of action that starts with launching a Kickstarter campaign in an effort to raise enough money to put a pitch together.
Don Bluth Films, Inc. own the rights to Dragon’s Lair outright, which makes this whole process a bit simpler. Still, being an independent animation company can incur a great deal of expenses. The Kickstarter page notes that the crowdfunding route should allow them to develop a strong story without having to cow to studio forces.
Backers will receive pins, hats, shirts, posters, Blu-rays, a place in the credits, and even a caricature of yourself, plus many other options depending how much you pledge. The money raised will be used specifically to put together a teaser presentation with recorded dialog and artwork that will then be utilized to bring in even more investors.
Dragon’s Lair revolutionized arcade games with its 1983 release. Instead of going the traditional route, Cinematronics utilized LaserDisc technology to present Dirk, Daphne, and the rest as animated characters rendered by cartooning legend Don Bluth. However, what players gained in visuals, they lost in gameplay ability. Over the years,*Dragon’s Lair and fellow Bluth-created game Space Ace have been ported over to a variety of next-gen and mobile platforms.
One of animation’s giant talents, Bluth worked on Robin Hood and The Rescuers at Disney before eventually moving on to projects like An American Tale, The Secret of NIMH, and The Land Before Time. He’s also continued working in the video game industry on games like the mobile phone update of Tapper called Tapper World Tour.
