Whenever Oculus Rift is talked about here on Geek, we always tend to come back to the fact it’s got loads of potential when combined with the right peripherals. A virtual reality headset on its own does offer a whole new level of immersion, but that’s further enhanced to the point of “must-have” when combined with a motion controller and the ability to move around.
It seems as though Oculus has picked up on that fact, too, and the Rift isn’t the only piece of hardware being developing internally at the company. Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has all but confirmed an official virtual reality controller is also in the works.
Luckey has stated that he doesn’t believe traditional controllers are the correct form of input for a virtual reality experience. That lead to the obvious question of if Oculus would ever consider developing it’s own controller. His response is telling: “When are we going to create it, or when are we going to announce it?”
No confirmation was given that such a controller is definitely in development, but Luckey has confirmed they have people researching and developing input solutions. I suspect there is a room within Oculus full of prototype controllers the team has been working on.
It makes sense to have an official controller to sit alongside the headset. That means Oculus has something else to sell and profit from, and developers have a baseline controller with which to work. If it comes to market it will inevitably end up being bundled with the Oculus Rift I’d imagine. And if that happens, then there’s a much greater chance Disney will green light an official Star Wars lightsaber VR game.
