Throughout my illustrious elementary school career, only two fads were ever banned from school premises: Pogs (supposedly due to the damage heavy metal slammers could cause) and slap bracelets (because they would supposedly break during the slapping process and slice open wrists left and right). Friends in other schools relayed the message — slap bracelets were banned for the grave wrist-based destruction they wrought.
As far as it seemed, that killed the slap bracelet’s momentum as a true pop icon. You don’t see them much anymore except at kitschy punk shops that don’t quite understand what punk is. Well, LG is bringing them back, but this time in the form of a capacitive stylus rather than a sinister plot perpetrated by Big Slap Bracelet to damage the wrists of all future human generations at an early age.
Earlier this year, it was discovered that LG filed a patent for a stylus that doubled as a slap bracelet so one could easily lug it around and prevent themselves from losing it. Making a little slot for a stylus within an LG device itself, apparently, wasn’t the proper solution. So far, leaks have suggested that the stylus fashion accessories will be solid, light-colored affairs — white, bright red, orange — and will sport some LG branding, and a little capacitive stylus tip on one end.
A source claims that LG currently hasn’t made its plans regarding distribution clear, but Verizon might include them as a purchase bonus when buying the new LG G Pad 8.3. However, a source of ours notes that LG has been giving out these slap styluses for at least a few months in goodie bags at press events. Furthermore, if you really want one of these bracelets but LG never brings them to the consumer public, a Kickstarter project was funded for an extremely similar product in April of 2013, so you’ll likely be able to get them around your wrist one way or another.
While styluses feel about as old and outdated as slap bracelets nowadays, this might be a fun, semi-useful product to own if it comes included free-of-charge with an LG purchase. Ideally, LG will bring back the slap trend whole hog and we’ll eventually have some fuzzy leopard-print stylus, as well as ones branded with a big No Fear logo.
