At the beginning of January LaCie introduced a brand new external hard drive called the Fuel. It was different because the drive was marketed as a completely wireless storage solution aimed at owners of iPads, iPhones, Apple TV, and Mac computers. And it really was completely wireless, including a battery so as to function when a power outlet isn’t available.
At $199.99 for 1TB of storage capacity the Fuel wasn’t exactly cheap, but this month LaCie is increasing the value of the Fuel substantially. A 2TB version is set to be introduced, with the good news being it only costs an extra $50 at $249.99. That’s still expensive, but $125 per terabyte is better than $200.
As well as a lot of extra storage for your devices without the hassle of wires, the Fuel offers 10 hours of battery life on a full charge. The drive creates its own WiFi network, meaning up to 5 devices can connect to it at once. Dropbox integration allows for easy backups and cloud file syncing, and there’s a USB 3.0 port for fast file transfers on and off the drive.
Although Apple devices are being focused on by LaCie, the drive is fully compatible with Windows Vista/7/8 and Android devices. Access is mainly going to be through a WiFi connection, so that removes a lot of the potential compatibility issues when it comes to streaming media.
The 2TB version of the Fuel is currently listed for preorder, but is set to arrive at some point this month. Hopefully the 1TB version will drop in price before too long.
