After initially indicating that they would, Microsoft's Albert Penello has revealed Xbox One owners will not have access to ad-supported streaming through Xbox Music.
Penello, Microsoft's senior director of product management and planning, was recently asked on Twitter about the ability to stream music through the Xbox Music service on Xbox One without a subscription. He answered this by stating, "[Y]es. You don't have to subscribe, but you will get periodic Ads." He added to that statement with a tweet today which reads, "But don't forget, Xbox Music supports Play-To of all your music directly from your PC."
As it turns out, those who aren't interested in streaming music from their PC are much more limited in what Xbox Music offers without a subscription. Penello*tweeted out a correction today regarding the service's free options: "I was wrong about Music on XboxOne: You get 15 free song plays then need Music Pass for ad-free streaming. No ad-supported streaming. Sorry!"
The possibility of being able to stream music for free (albeit with ads) was an exciting prospect and could have given Xbox One an additional music-related edge over PlayStation 4. Last week, it was revealed that PS4 lacks support for audio CD playback and DLNA streaming, two things which are supported by Xbox One.
Xbox Music first launched on Xbox 360 last year and has since expanded to offer its Music Pass on the web.*An app for Android and iOS devices was released in September.
