If you’re looking for a condensed audiovisual walk through of this week in tech and a few other fun things, you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to our weekly Geekout!
The Xbox One is here, only a week behind the exciting launch of the PS4. While Microsoft and Sony fans battle back and forth on which is the better buy this holiday season, we took a look at the consoles themselves to see what makes them worthy of being called “next generation” compared to their predecessors. The results have been extremely positive, and while both launches seem to be plagued with the occasional hardware defects, it looks like gaming this season is a win all around.
This week on Geekout we were joined by Cyanogen Inc’s Koushik Dutta, who took some time out of his busy schedule to talk about the Oppo N1 CyanogenMod edition and some of the other things this newly formed company is up to. If you’re a fan of CyanogenMod, or if you’ve been looking for an excuse to give them a try, it’s a really exciting time to be a part of that community.
The N1 wasn’t the only massive phone we were talking about this week. Sal spent some time recently with the Nokia 1520 Windows 8 phone and I’ve been using the Sprint HTC One Max for a little while. It’s clear that huge phones are here to stay, but what both of these phones seem to fail to offer is any benefit for being so huge. Sure, you’ve got the big screen, but if all you are getting is a stretched out version of existing hardware what’s the point? These guys have a lot of work to do in order to catch up to Samsung, who has spent the last two years adding value to larger screen with their Note line.
Our App of the Week should be a big hit for all of your Riddick fans out there. The unique anti-hero has made his way to Android in the form of Riddick: The Merc Files. This top down stealth assassination game loosely follows the recent movie, and for $3 is a great way to kill some time.
