[IMG]The Bayonetta series has won the hearts and minds of gamers everywhere with its stylish “climatic action” featuring the antics of a sexy, librarian, dominatrix, European bullet witch with the power to summon demons out of her own hair. Bayonetta 2 for the Wii U was one of the most acclaimed games of 2014, but with sales of that console still struggling, who knows when we’ll see the franchise reappear. Fortunately, the developers at Platinum games have created an 8-bit Bayonetta spin-off, Angel Land, for us to enjoy in the meantime.

While the franchise has some of the tightest action game controls around, much of Bayonetta’s appeal comes the spectacle. Battling giant, hideous, cherub-faced, angelic rock monsters on top of a fighter jet hurtling through space is just fun to look at. Obviously, a free retro browser game wouldn’t have the graphical fidelity to match something like that. Still, Angel Land translates a surprising amount of Bayonetta’s flavor, and we’re not just talking about the chiptunes remix of the theme song. The controls are dead simple. Press a button to jump and another to shoot. It even works on iOS. But taking down enemies still requires a careful blend of graceful movement and accurate shooting that recalls the violent dance fighting of Bayonetta on consoles. It’s a lot harder than it looks too. And the best part? It’s based on an old April Fool’s joke from 2010. Watch.
Platinum Games was teasing more Bayonetta in 2015 late last year and this appears to be the project they were talking about. With the studio deep in development on games like Scalebound for Xbox One and possibly a sequel to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (although that may have been debunked) it’s hard to imagine a full-fledged Bayonetta 3 being revealed anytime soon. Stranger things have happened though, like that fact that we even got a Bayonetta 2 at all.
