Apple made some major design changes to the iPhone this year, introducing both a 4.7 and 5.5-inch model. The larger edge-to-edge size of the devices allowed Apple to pack the components into an even thinner package than ever before. The camera, however, can only get so small. That means in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, it sticks out noticeably. Apple really doesn’t want you to realize that, so it’s editing press photos.
The iPhone 6 uses another 8MP camera while most Android devices have moved on to 13-16MP. Of course, it’s about more than the number of pixels on a sensor. The iPhone has always taken awesome images, and early reports indicate the iPhone 6 is no exception. The camera simply has to be a certain size to take in enough light. As such, the camera protrudes less than a millimeters from the iPhone’s 6.9mm frame.
When the lens of the camera is in view, everything looks normal in Apple’s press photos. However, all the profile shots that show off how thin the devices are lack the distinctive camera bulge. The camera bulge is 0.7mm above the body of the device, which happens to be the same amount the iPhone was slimmed down this year. If Apple had simply stuck to a 7.4mm thick frame, no one would have complained and the camera would likely have fit. Maybe the battery could have been beefed up a little more as well.
Apple’s decision to keep the camera off to the left on the back has the potential to make the phone a bit more awkward to use when it’s on a flat surface. However, plenty of Android devices have curved backs and camera humps, and we’ve adapted. It might not be the best design decision, but it won’t kill sales. Apple should stop trying to pretend the bump doesn’t exist, though.
