Though Apple is known for its sleek computers and mobile devices,*the company’s displays are just as sleek, though often overlooked considering most of its computers come with the display built in. The Thunderbolt Display was introduced over three years ago, and now a new report claims that Apple is prepping an impressive upgrade that will skip 4K and go straight to 5K.
LCD market research firm WitsView claims that Apple may launch a new 27-inch monitor this year, and will forego 4K resolution in favor of 5K. WitsView says the new display will feature a 5120 x 2880 resolution, which is noticeably higher than 4K’s 3840 x 2160, and much higher than the current Thunderbolt Display’s 2560 x 1440.
Whether or not WitsView’s reports*are correct is a mystery, but another mystery would be how Apple plans to have its devices power a 5K display. Many of Apple’s devices can power a 4K display through one Thunderbolt port, but they have to do so at specific refresh rates; a 5K display would likely require more juice. The maximum resolution supported by the DisplayPort 1.2 standard (which is used in the Thunderbolt port found on many Apple devices) is only 4096 x 2160, a far cry below 5120 x 2880.
Earlier this month, Dell unveiled a new 5K monitor*with the same stats as the reported Apple display — 27 inches, 5120 x 2880 display. Similarly, it wasn’t made clear what would actually power the display, though it was speculated that Dell would employ two DisplayPort 1.2 inputs running multi-stream transport in order to combine the images.
There are less than four months left in the year, so we won’t have to wait too long to find out if the report is true or not. Until then, you’ll have to continue to deal with your measly 4K display.
In other display news, your Raspberry Pi can now support two monitors.
