Hitting
Nick Castellanos OF Detroit- One of the most eagerly awaited prospects, becomes one of the last to get the call. Castellanos rated by some as the top hitting prospect in the game and will step right into a solid lineup. In 134 games at Triple-A Toledo this season, Castellanos hit .276 with 18 home runs, 76 RBI and four stolen bases.
Alex Presley OF Minnesota- Acquired from Pittsburgh in the Justin Morneau deal, the Twins wasted little time inserting Presley in the lineup. In his first game with Minnesota, Presley went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Presley hit .289 with a pair of home runs in 76 at bats with the Pirates. Presley displayed some speed in the minors with 17 steals.
Michael Choice OF Oakland- With Josh Reddick disabled and Coco Crisp having a hard time staying healthy, the A's found it a perfect opportunity to see what their top hitting prospect can do. Choice had been very hot of late at Sacramento, on the season he hit .302 with 14 home runs and 89 RBI. He should be in the middle of the A's lineup next Spring.
Billy Hamilton OF Cincinnati- Finally, the stolen base king has arrived. Lets just hope he gets enough at bats to single handedly carry you to the top of the steals category!* The 22 year old Hamilton was disappointing in Triple-A, hitting only .256, but he did add six home runs and 41 RBI. But it is Hamilton's 75 steals in 90 attempts that you have been waiting for!
Dustin Ackley 2B Seattle- Ackley has been the hottest hitter in baseball of late and while he is learning to play the outfield, qualifies at 2B in fantasy leagues. Ackley is raking at a .411 rate in August and has raised his season average some 50 points in the process. In the last week alone, Ackley has homered and driven home eleven runs.
Hank Conger C LA Angels- Is Conger taking over the regular catching duties for the Angels? The Angels are looking at some of their younger talent and the 25 year old, switch hitting backstop certainly is among them.*In limited at bats this season (195), Conger is hitting .256 with seven home runs and 19 RBI, while slugging at nearly a .450 clip.
Pitching
Michael Wacha SP St.Louis- Wacha first received the call in June as a starter, then returned two months later, limited to a relief role. Wacha is getting the call again, this time to join the rotation. In 15 Triple-A starts this season, Wacha went 5-3 with a 2.64 ERA and a .988 WHIP. In 10 appearances with the Cards, Wacha is 2-0 with a 3.78 ERA and 1.17 WHIP.
Taijuan Walker SP Seattle- The first and perhaps best of a trio of Seattle pitching prospects got the call and had electric stuff on Friday night at Houston. Walker going five innings, allowing only a pair of hits, an unearned run, with a walk and a pair of K's. Walker may be with the Mariners to stay and adds to what could become a very scary rotation for opponents.
Danny Duffy SP Kansas City- After three outstanding starts, Duffy finally stumbled a bit on Monday night. Duffy allowed nine baserunners in less than four innings of work, but it is his numbers entering the start against Kansas City that caught our attention. Duffy was 2-0 in three starts, with an ERA of 1.10 and a 1.04 WHIP in just over 16 innings of work.
Brandon McCarthy SP Arizona- McCarthy was coming off a pasting by the Reds when he faced San Diego last Monday night. McCarthy made some changes to his delivery and worked seven strong innings, allowing only five hits, an unearned run, while striking out five and not issuing a walk.* McCarthy followed it up with a hard luck, complete game loss to the Jays.
Heath Hembree RP San Francisco- Looking for a closer of the future? Hembree may be your man. Sergio Romo is still going strong, but you never know with closers. Hembree struggled a bit this season, but did post 31 saves at Triple-A Fresno. Hembree did strike out 63 in only 55 innings of work, while issuing only 16 bases on balls.
Yusmeiro Petit SP San Francisco- Wow! Where did Petit come from? Petit has been pitching lights out and getting better with every start. Petit worked six strong innings at Arizona on Sunday, allowing two earned runs, while striking out ten and issuing only a single walk. Petit allowed only two earned runs in his previous two starts, a win and a no decision.
