Joss Whedon wants Avengers: Age of Ultron viewers to know that super-powered newcomers Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) are “massively important new characters.” In fact, he said exactly that in this video released on the Marvel UK YouTube channel featuring interviews by the director, Olsen, Taylor-Johnson and even Captain America himself Chris Evans. This is the first and best look at these two characters who join Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Colbie Smulders and many more in the May 1-debuting film.
Smulder’s SHIELD Agent Maria Hill explains that they are twins named Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, the same as in the comics. Though there will be one major difference from the source material and the comes down to parentage. In the books, these two villains-turned-heroes are the offspring of mutant militant Magneto, a character currently appearing in Fox’s X-films. In fact, a version of Quicksilver popped up in X-Men: Days of Future Past as played by Evan Peters, but since Fox and Marvel Studios haven’t reached a deal like Marvel did with Sony and the Spider-Man franchise, these are two separate beasts.
Whedon also discussed that characters abilities. Quicksilver is “as fast or almost as fast as a bullet,” he said. Taylor-Johnson added that everything, including*his mind, works so fast that he gets aggravated by how slow the rest of the world is.
On the subject of Scarlet Witch, a character with magical abilities in the comics, Whedon said that she is a telekinetic who “can move things and she can get inside your head so that all your worst fears and doubts come to the fore.”
While Olsen described Quicksilver as “fast and quick and anxious,” she said that Scarlet Witch is “grounded and thoughtful.” The actress also noted that her character is “connected” and “grounded…with the universe.” Wanda has so much power that it messed up the Avengers to the point where they have to retreat and shore themselves up as a team. It’s also worth noting that, while all this is going on, the team must also deal with a massively powerful robot called Ultron voiced by James Spader, which is a big enough threat on its own.
For good measure, here are the film’s character-specific posters for Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.
